The setting of the story takes place at the end of the 21st century, where many countries have unified into supranational powers (like the European Union). North and South America have formed the Federation of the Americas for the purposes of common defence, common currency, and competition against the other powers, such as the EU, the Pacific Union, the Chinese Hegemony and so forth. A squad of the 101st Airborne Division is being sent to the border of the Colombian and Venezuelan nation states to rescue a VIP from a revitalized FARC.
